Recapping Week 2

Week 2 of the Portuguese League brought intense action and unexpected scorelines. Here is how all nine matches unfolded across Portugal.
The Big Three Make Their Mark
Benfica delivered the performance of the week by obliterating Casa Pia 7-0 on the road, bouncing back in style from their opening-week draw. Sporting also secured a vital first victory at the Alvalade Stadium, overcoming a resilient Vitoria Guimaraes side 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal encounter. Meanwhile, FC Porto maintained their perfect start to the new campaign, comfortably defeating Rio Ave 2-0 away from home to keep pace at the top of the table.
High-Scoring Thrillers and Blowouts
The rest of the week produced high-scoring spectacles alongside tactical masterclasses. Arouca put on a clinic at home, crushing Moreirense 4-0 to register their second win to start the season. Nacional also enjoyed a successful weekend by picking up a clean-sheet home victory over Estoril 2-0. Elsewhere, Santa Clara edged out Academico de Viseu 1-0 in a tight defensive battle, while Maritimo showed great spirit away from home, securing a narrow 2-1 triumph over Famalicao. Alverca and Amadora fought to an entertaining 2-2 draw in a battle of Lisbon clubs. Braga’s scheduled clash against Gil Vicente was postponed due to a food illness outbreak with the Braga squad.
Multi-Goal Heroes & Playmaking Wizards
The clear individual standout of the entire matchday was Benfica’s star striker, Vangelis Pavlidis. He delivered a masterful performance, scoring an incredible second-half hat-trick with goals in the 47th, 49th, and 54th minutes, while adding an assist to completely bury Casa Pia. Alongside him in the headlines was Arouca winger Nais Djouahra who put on a creative display, being credited with 2 assists in his club’s victory over Moreirense.
