Torreense stun Sporting to capture the Taca de Portugal and head to Europa League next season

In one of the greatest upsets in the history of Portuguese football, second-division side Torreense defeated last season’s Portuguese League title winners Sporting for the Taca de Portugal trophy. Torreense’s 2-1 win after additional time was needed was played at the Estadio Nacional do Jamor and is Torreense’s first major trophy in it’s 109 year history.
The underdogs, who reached their first Taca de Portugal final since 1956, produced a heroic defensive display to topple the heavily favoured Sporting. Veteran defender and team captain Stopira emerged as the hero, converting the decisive penalty in the 113th minute. Torreense’s disciplined on field organization gave Sporting fits throughout the contest and resulted in a fairytale ending for the club from Torres Vedras.
Torreense’s remarkable run not over yet
This victory carries profound historic significance as Torreense becomes the first-ever second-tier club to win the Taca de Portugal. The achievement caps a remarkable ascent, having climbed from the third tier just four years ago. The win also secures a coveted spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League. Torreense will gain direct entry into the league phase and play at minimum eight contests against other European clubs. This is remarkable achievement for this small town club, who plays in a stadium that holds slightly over 2,400 fans.
The players and the fans were ecstatic and the celebrations that followed on the field showed as much. Torreense can continue their remarkable season on Thursday when they play Casa Pia for a spot in the top division. The outright winner of the second leg contest will get that spot next season, following a scoreless first leg draw this past Wednesday. Torreense’s victory is a win for the little guy and one of the bigger upsets in football world this season.
